IADD Staying Ahead of the Curve - November Newsletter
Published: Fri, 11/05/21
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
We wrap up this year with a modest flurry of activity. Check out what is going on!
November 11 is Veterans Day. IADD joins a group of sponsors to offer free to veterans, breakfast, or lunch at Honor Café in Conroe. If you would like to sponsor or volunteer, you can contribute on the website or contact us. If you are a veteran, please come out and join us as we honor your service.
In an unusual move for us, we will have a presentation in November. IADD will welcome Graham Mensa-Wilmot to speak on Performance Risks, Limiters, and Dysfunctions. This will be on Thursday, November 18. Graham has a somewhat unique perspective on this important topic.
Our year will wrap up on December 3rd with our first annual Clay and Play. This will offer a combination of Sporting Clays and Corn Hole at Able Gun Club in Huntsville. This will be a great social event at great venue. Sign up today!
We are looking to restructure the leadership team by incorporating topical committees to focus on a specific area. These can include technical areas such as MWD or Bits, or a geographical area such as the Permian or Marcellus. These groups will pull together presentations and information around these topics and present them throughout the year. If you are interested in joining one of these groups let
us know.
On a personnel standpoint, Cheryl has had a setback in her health and will be retiring as of November 1. She has been a stalwart of IADD for many years and I want to thank her for her efforts and dedication.
We will be adding an intern as of November 1. Jomana Abdel Razik is a master’s in petroleum engineering student at the University of Houston. She will be helping with a lot of the technical content in our publications and website and assisting with our various events. Join me in welcoming her to the IADD family.
This has been an unusual year for many people and organizations, and this is no different for us at IADD. As the year draws to a close, let’s focus on what we can accomplish together in 2022 and work towards those goals.

Analysis and Relationships - Contributions to Cycle Time and Operational Cost Reductions
Thursday, November 18, 2021
Drilling Efficiency Improvements must reduce cycle time and operational costs. This expectation demands identification of all factors and challenges that influence drilling efficiency. These considerations, categorized as Project Risks, Performance Limiters, and Drilling Dysfunctions (RLD), must be analyzed holistically, to facilitate development of cycle time reducing solutions. As is evident from field performances and benchmarking, developed solutions
continue to yield inconsistent results. This is primarily due to the absence of appropriate definitions for the RLD factors. Consequently - analysis, relationships, implications, and resulting effects of these factors on peak performance, are not clearly established.
Contrary to current positions, Risks and Limiters are different elements, with dissimilar drivers and contributions to drilling efficiency. This presentation will define, clarify, establish dependencies, and identify effects of RLD elements on peak performance. Additionally, it will show how systematic and holistic project interpretations confirm differences between Risks and Limiters, leading to development of effective drilling systems and appropriate field execution
practices. This approach drives identification, analysis, and remediation of dysfunctions in planning and execution phases, thereby ensuring cycle time and operational cost reductions. Field cases, supporting these positions, analysis, and discussions, will also be presented.
