Rotary Steerable Drilling Systems have evolved to be an integrated part of the directional drilling systems portfolio. A number of different steering principles and associated actuation systems have been developed and implemented to orient the BHA at various levels of automation.
Typically, we recognize drilling systems that are capable of seeking verticality to provide a straight wellbore during drilling the top hole and intermediate section in application of high formation dips that cause strong inclination build tendencies.
Long reach horizontal sections typically beyond 8000 ft of lateral length represent the most common application especially when high wellbore placement accuracy in thin production zones or geo steering in unconventional reservoirs is critical to success.
The requirements to further reduce drilling cost led to the development of tools with high angle build capabilities to enable the operator to drill the curve and lateral in one run. Starting with successful applications in relatively benign applications such as the Marcellus, this technology now is expanding into more demanding basins as performance reliability is increasing.
While we have witnessed a lot of success, the industry has also seen a fair share of disappointments. Many times operators and service providers were able to create success by upgrading the tool design, its programming, and the application engineering work that has proven to be absolutely critical before deployment.
In order to provide an opportunity to share lessons learned and best practices, the IADD will host an event solely dedicated to Rotary Steerable Systems. A large number of Rotary Steerable Systems providers will display their technology while Directional Drilling Companies and operators will present application reviews to continue to grow the success rate of RSS deployment.
This event provides the most comprehensive overview of the RSS technology in our industry and provides all industry professionals with an opportunity to be part of the discussion and to assist in defining future requirements. For those that are new to our industry this event is a great learning opportunity that you don’t want to miss.
