Have we gotten too good at what we do?  As I survey the landscape, I see us drilling 22,000’+ wells in 15-17 days.  These same wells would take 35-40 days to drill just a few years ago.  While these are certainly noteworthy accomplishments, there is a constant push for more.  This leads to diminishing returns for the service providers and an unscratched itch for the operators because there are still uncertainties about the economic viability of many of these wells at the current commodity pricing levels.  The US has become a bull on the global energy market, but can our industry maintain this over the long haul? 

I believe that we need to pay closer attention to the quality of the wells that we are delivering.  Currently the dominant metric is footage drilled per day, but how does this affect the lifecycle costs of the well?  Drilling accounts for 40% of the well construction costs in most unconventional wells, and an even smaller fraction of the operating costs for the life of the well, so are we being penny-wise and pound foolish with the approach that many companies are taking?

In this case I believe that we can have our cake and eat it too!  Paying closer attention to the quality of the wellbore pays dividends in downhole tool reliability and in lowering the cost of repairs.  Instantaneous ROP is not the primary objective!  But the real difference comes in longer term lease operating costs and possibly in production rates.  While the impact on production is still not completely quantified, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that better quality wells deliver better production results.

What is the solution?  Communication!  I consistently observe the “I didn't know that” reaction.  This is true within companies and across disciplines.  I believe that IADD can help to bridge this cross-discipline/cross-company gap.  We are close to completing our 2020 schedule with just this in mind.  Not just our monthly meetings and forums but an aggressive training schedule that will help get the word out.  Our industry is changing rapidly, and we have to anticipate and plan for those changes.  Our Annual Technical Forum, Drilling in the 20’s, is designed to do just that.  Sign up and join the discussion!

Our 2019 Annual Technical Forum (ATF) has been dedicated to providing an opportunity to take a comprehensive look at the well construction operations, the technology that is being deployed, and associated lessons learned in some of the key drilling areas in North America and Internationally.
