Operators continue to face an increasingly challenging environment to safely, economically, and reliably develop and produce hydrocarbon resources. Available surface locations versus downhole drilling targets, the shape and size of
leases, as well as the position of existing producers usually require complex wellbore geometries to successfully intersect all targets in the production zone.
As well complexity and horizontal length increases, the production of quality wellbores become an increasingly challenging task. Rotational and longitudinal stick slip are usually the root causes for the inability to maintain tight
control of bottom hole operating parameters such as WOB and RPM at the BHA. Wellbore irregularities such as hole spiraling, bottle necking, and sinusoidal waviness contribute to elevated levels of torque and drag which expands the window of encountering unfavorable drilling conditions. Localized dog legs and ledging are known to create a huge absorption of WOB to the point that it may become impossible to slide. The configuration of the BHA including motor setting angle and / or the programming
of Rotary Steerable assemblies are known to greatly influence this effect.
Various operators, drilling contractors, the service industry, and equipment manufacturers have developed a number of technologies, procedures, and software solutions that have proven to successfully address drilling dysfunctions and
helped to improve wellbore quality which is understood to be a fundamental requirement to improve drilling performance in extended reach wells. In addition, better quality wells will also aid in installing completion equipment and facilitate the performance reliability of artificial lift systems.
In order to provide a forum to share lessons learned, define challenges and improvement opportunities, and to get an update on state of the art solutions available, the IADD has scheduled an extended luncheon event on April
11th 2019 at Pioneer’s HQ location in Irving, TX who is providing the facility for us to meet.
Operators, Service Providers, and manufacturers will take the stage and share solutions and challenges for constructing quality horizontal wellbores. This is another great opportunity to learn, share, and provide your input into the
discussion. We are looking forward to seeing you on April 11th.
