Featured Event - Pushing the Limits Topical Forum
|
Operators are continually pushing the drilling limits, with respect to on-bottom performance, departure distance and well density. Multiple unconventional wells have been drilled in the last several years, with lateral lengths exceeding 19,000 ft and measured depths greater than 27,000 ft. Other wells of similar design have exceeded drilling rates of a mile/day in specific intervals and 1,200ft/day in
overall well performance.
Pushing the physical limits present both technical and economic challenges. Directionally drilling these long wells with minimal tortuosity and acceptable collision risk is critical. Selection, performance and reliability of downhole tools are key. Even with optimal trajectories, drilling torque may push the limits of topdrives and drillstrings. With weight limitations, alternative solutions to
increase horsepower to the bit can introduce new modes of dysfunction, which are undetectable at surface...

February Monthly Luncheon - Richard Spears
|
As the oil price has been weakening during the past month, the uncertainty to predict the level of upstream activity for 2019 clearly has been increasing. In order to provide additional insight and to offer a forum for discussion around what to expect for the current year, the Houston Chapter of the International Association of Directional Drilling will be dedicating it’s February Luncheon to provide an
update on the state of our industry.
The IADD is honored to welcome one of the most recognized market research professionals for the February 28th event. Richard Spears from Spears & Associates will share some of the KPI’s that his team is monitoring and provide his expectations for the near term. This is an event that you don’t want to miss as it provides a great opportunity to interact with your industry peers, get
their take on the business, and provide your input for the discussion...

Sporting Clay Tournament Recap
|
Due to the inclement weather in December flooding the course the 2018 IADD Clay Shoot was held on January 18, 2019. We had three full rosters of shooters this year and three generous companies providing food cooked onsite for us. We would like to thank Blackwood Gun Club, Integrity Directional, Ulterra, and DrillScan for their hospitality. Most importantly, we would like to
thank our participants, even with the rescheduling of the event, we did not lose any of our loyal IADD shooters. That’s one of the many reasons you guys are the BEST!
This was a terrific event, with our highest individual shooter coming in with a score of 97. Congratulations Joe Garza, with that incredible score! Our top two teams came in close to each other shooting a 359 and 355, respectively. Great job guys!
Our official 2019 Clay Shoot will be held on December 6th at Blackwood Gun Club, although we had such a great time this month that we are considering adding a midyear shoot as well. We will get back with you on that one.

Just a year after rushing into America’s busiest oil field with new mines, frack-sand producers may have overdone it. West Texas sand used in the hydraulic fracturing process will drop 19 percent this year to about $30 a ton
compared to 2018, according to industry consultant Rystad Energy AS. Sand pricing is a key financial input for oil explorers because fracking is the most expensive phase in drilling an oil well...

Oil and gas operating costs in the U.S. shale basins have come down recently following a drop in crude prices, BP’s head of upstream Bernard Looney said on Tuesday. Costs of drilling, labour and materials such as sand in shale fields rose last year amid a surge in output, particularly in the prolific Permian oil basin straddling Texas and New Mexico.
But a near 40 percent drop in crude prices in the last quarter of 2018 have helped reverse the rise in service costs, Looney said...
