ATF Session 2: Wellbore Quality
Tuesday, February 23, 2021
Begins at 10 AM CST
Wellbore Quality is usually discussed in the directional drilling world relative to the physical shape of the well path. Our discussion is filled with terms such as “dogleg severity”, “tortuosity”, and “cumulative dogleg severity”. These are useful concepts in defining how well the path followed the predefined ideal plan. Unfortunately, these quality issues don’t necessarily define the quality issues for completion,
production, and reservoir. The other disciplines have attempted to utilize our concepts and definitions, but the concepts fall short of the need of those who have to utilize our wells for decades. This session will focus on the wellbore quality concepts as needed by the other disciplines. It will also address issues that are outside of the purvey of the drilling world. These issues will include the impact of timing of drilling, pressure regime of the reservoir when drilled, and the impact of
offset wells on each other. While many drillers may believe that these topics are unnecessary for their effort, they need to stay in the conversation in order to create wells that are financially successful. If we drill financially successful wells, not just cheap wells, we will keep drilling.
