Near Bit Measurement Technologies
Many in our industry are chasing digital data. To stay alive in this industry we must optimize the way we collect, measure, analyze and predict the results of digital data to improve drilling efficiencies and overall performance. One pathway starts with understanding data collection within the
drillstring with near bit measurement technologies. Please join this IADD luncheon session to learn more about: - What are we chasing? …and why are we chasing the big data?
- What near bit technologies exist today by drill bit providers?
- What impact have we made in the industry so far?
- What else is needed?

Donations Requested Over the years, the IADD has partnered
with Operation Military Embrace, Inc., (OME)—a Texas-based tax-exempt/non-profit 501(c)(3) military support organization that’s helps America’s seriously injured and ill Warriors and their families in their time of need—through the donation of cash and household items (toys, kitchen items, linens, etc.). This year, we’d like to invite attendees to our Houston chapter luncheons
to bring items (clothes, gift cards, food items, etc.), which will then be given to wounded service members at Camp Hope (Houston campus for the PTSD Foundation), as well as other private and VA facilities throughout the year. For a list of what is needed, click here. For information on OME, go to http://www.operationmilitaryembrace.com/. |

Letter From the Houston Chapter Director
|
As rotary steerable applications continue to grow, the IADD Houston chapter
has started to focus on downhole motor designs especially suited to drive RSS systems for the construction of long reach (10,000 ft+) horizontal wellbores. During our May luncheon Doc Gunther shared Rival’s motor technology with special attention to the drive line torque capability, radial load capacity of the bearing stack, as well as to the outer tube connections. Enhancements in ROP and cutting efficiency using an innovative motor design incorporating an impact device have been discussed as
well. About 85 industry professionals attended this event which was held at Landry’s in The Woodlands. For our June event we have decided to shed more light on near bit measurements. While our industry witnesses a trend to bring sensors closer to the bit, we like to help establish the rationale
for it and discuss what sensors should be brought as close as possible to the bit, and more importantly answer the question why? Specialists from a number of service providers will discuss the pro’s and con’s in an open forum where every participant can assume an active role during the discussion. Please join us on June 21st at Landry’s at 11:00 Am. Sincerely, Roland Illerhaus Houston Chapter Executive Director |
OME - Update on EOD Tech Kenton Stacy
|
OME, (Operation Military Embrace), attended the
presentation of a Bronze Star to Navy EOD Tech Kenton Stacy. OME was extremely honored to be invited by Lindsey Stacy, Kenton’s wife, to attend the ceremony in which Kenton was presented the Bronze Star with Combat “V” (for
Valor) by U. S. Navy Commodore Captain Mariono with two other Navy representatives in attendance. Kenton was certainly a deserving recipient of this award! (see attached).OME would also like to thank our good friend, Jim Oberkircher with IADD, for attending this ceremony representing the members of IADD who have donated and attended IADD events which have contributed
to the injured service members helped by OME. Your continuing support is so needed and appreciated. Thank you, Jerry Reed Operation Military Embrace Below are photos from Kenton Stacy's Bronze Star Ceremony |

Mud Pulse Telemetry is encoded data which is transmitted using pressure wave from a downhole tool to an uphole receiver. Mud pulse telemetry is commonly encoded using a technique referred to as M-ary encoding. This paper will describe the encoding and decoding of M-ary data from a physical medium...

Infrastructure bottlenecks in the Permian Basin are weighing hard on drillers and investors alike, causing an energy stock sell-off that has slashed the market valuations of eight of the top Permian explorers by a combined $15.6 billion. However, the low crude prices that result from the transportation constraints work in favor of US refiners such as Delek US Holdings, which sources about 78% of
its crude from the Permian...

U.S. energy companies added oil rigs for a third week in a row even though crude prices have declined about 8 percent over the past three weeks. Drillers added one oil rig in the week to June 8, bringing the total count to 862, the highest level since March 2015, General Electric Co’s Baker Hughes energy services firm said in its closely followed report on Friday..
