RSS Themed Spring Social Event |
Please join us on Thursday, April 19, at Landry’s Seafood Restaurant in The Woodlands from 5 until 8
p.m. to learn about various rotary steerable systems (RSS) or for a refreshing change of pace to the mid-week blahs. Hors d'oeuvres and the first drink are on us. Make sure you check out our RSS sponsors in the Landry’s parking lot. They’ll have tools on display and representatives to help you learn more about their rotary steerable systems Sponsorship Opportunities If you are interested in

April Monthly Luncheon - Rig Capabilities |
Please join us on April 26th to hear presentations and engage in a
discussion of how rig surface equipment will influence and facilitate the directional drilling process and can be used to optimize drilling parameters for maximum drilling rate and wellbore positioning accuracy. Software guided operations such as torque management, rocking the pipe, automatic feed off / Autodrillers , Rpm control, making connections, etc. will be presented. In addition, drilling optimization, the trouble shooting process, and remote monitoring will be discussed. The
presentations are targeted for about 20 minutes followed by Q&A. Subsequently we will open the discussion to summarize where on a technological, competency, and capability level the industry operates and more importantly identify the mission critical elements to improve the construction of wellbores with focusing on high inclined and horizontal wells. The ultimate deliverable for the event is to identify needed process and technology development
to fill the gaps that may exist today. As always, the target of the IADD is to bring industry professionals, students, and anyone who is interested together to share their experiences, and viewpoints to help define the path forward and to provide a great learning opportunity for all attendees. The Luncheon will be held at Southwestern Energy Headquarters – 10000 Energy Drive-Spring-TX 77389. The meeting will start at 10:30. Please follow the signs that will direct you to the SWN parking garage.
Make sure you obey the speed limit (10 MPH) and as a courtesy to the SWN employees please park at the less frequented levels 4 and higher. We are excited to meet you on the 26th. |

Targeted Technology Series 2018: Geosteering Solutions Forum and Golf Tournament |
As the industry has moved from drilling primarily vertical wells to horizontal,
the ability to steer, navigate and stay in the target reservoir zone has become more important. The need to understand the reservoir and its most prolific zones has also increased. While geosteering capabilities have improved over the years, they have often created scenarios that put them at odds with conventional drilling objectives. Join us at the IADD Targeted Technology Series, featuring geosteering solutions,
where we’ll have a constructive dialogue about what can be done to satisfy both camps as attendees will hear from presenters on how we can identify and discuss these sometimes-conflicting criteria. An industry networking charity golf event will follow the forum. Whether you choose to attend either the forum or golf, or both, we look forward to seeing you on May 21! WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? - Hear from industry leaders and geosteering experts through a series of panel presentations that will discuss:
- Operator needs
- Drilling issues
- New technology
- Network with your coworkers, clients and industry colleagues over 18 holes of golf
EVENT PLANNING COMMITTEE - Forum co-chair: Greg O’Donnell, Pioneer Natural Resources
- Forum committee: Bill Lesso, Independent Drilling Advisor
- Forum committee: Marty Paulk, Disruptovate, LLC
- Golf tournament co-chair: Shelly Cory, Baker Hughes, a GE Company
- Golf tournament committee: Alan
Tannehill, NOV

Wellbore Quality as a (W)hole Topical Forum |
How do you measure
quality? What are the criteria? Making these assessments can be especially elusive when talking about your well. Wellbore quality also means different things to different people who are involved with placing the well and optimizing production. - To a directional driller, it can be about painting the line
- To a geologist, it can be about identifying and staying in the zone
- To a completion engineer, it can be about the ease of running casing or a completion system
- To a production engineer, it can be about production rates or minimizing workovers or well
interventions
What are the metrics used? Are they aligned or diametrically opposed? Is one group even aware of the scorecard being used by the other? This IADD topical forum will address these issues and determine the criteria for success. We will foster dialogue and understanding of the business metrics utilized by each group and
discuss how the well construction process impacts the completion and production teams. We will also seek to define consistent, cross-discipline metrics that meet the goals and expectations of each group. We look forward to seeing each of you at this exciting event. IADD Houston Chapter News |
During the month of March, we
continued our discussion on drilling optimization. Vinesh Rambally from NOV and Yezid Arevalo from SLB shared their respective downhole data acquisition technology. Hani Ibrahim from Quantico provide an insight on data interpretation. About 75 industry professionals in attendance helped to make this another great learning experience and discussion forum. During the month of April, the IADD Houston chapter will host two events. On April 19th we will have our Spring Social at Landry’s in The Woodlands from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Following up on our Rotary Steerable system series from last year; Scout, Double Barrel, NOV, TerraVici, D-tech, W-Technology, and others will display Rotary Steerable Drilling Systems as well as key components. This is a great opportunity to get a comprehensive overview over the RSS technology and
meet with your industry peers. On April 26th we will have our Luncheon at Southwestern Energy HQ (10000 Energy Drive in Spring). During this event we will look at systems to control and optimize drilling parameters from the surface. A couple of major drilling contractors will discuss their technology and associated rig instrumentation.
Based on the feedback received from previous events we will allocate an extended (30-45 minute) discussion block to expand the opportunity for all attendees to share their thoughts and experiences. More detail will be provided during the next couple of weeks. Sincerely, Roland Illerhaus Houston Chapter Director
Data Driven Drilling & Production Conference |
Jim Oberkircher, IADD's Director, has been invited to co-chair and organize a panel session at the Data Driven Drilling & Production Conference on May 30
- 31 in Houston. The Digital Drilling Optimization session will help provide: - Insight on how digital twin applications and modeling can improve well placement accuracy and minimize personnel exposure.
- Learn more about the latest improvements in visualization technologies and simulators.
- Review progress on autonomous drilling rig technology.
- The Journey ahead to Data Driven Cognitive Cyber Drilling Systems: Early Kick Detection using Adaptive Analytics with
Deconvoluted Downhole Accelerometer Data.
It's clear that if oil & gas companies want to grow market share and be competitive, they need to understand and implement data driven drilling and production methods... and fast. That's why the Data Driven Drilling & Production Conference is back for 2018 and bigger than ever. For more information on the conference, click here.

Sponsor Spotlight - Bench Tree |
Bench Tree is the industry leader in reliable and accurate MWD-LWD solutions. Since their first product
was introduced, they have revolutionized MWD-LWD systems by understanding and meeting client needs and challenges. Bench Tree recognizes what downtime can mean, so they set new standards for reliability, compatibility, short lead times and responsiveness. The Bench Tree HPR resistivity tool provides operators and service companies with improved performance and precise measurements, while reducing downtime and operation costs. Its simplified
design, with signal and processing power in one package, has fewer connection points for higher reliability. The dual-frequency, propagating-wave system offers accurate resistivity data in a broad range of formation properties and temperatures, while consuming minimal power to stay downhole longer. With a flat response throughout its operating temperature range (up to 175°C), it exceeds the capabilities of other tools. It can be run on
virtually any LWD architecture.
