Monthly Luncheon - Downhole Data Acquisition |
Substantial gains in defining and understanding relevant factors that drive
drilling performance have been made. Operators, contractors, service companies, and institutions have made major contributions to successfully model BHA static and dynamic behavior, drilling efficiency, bit-rock interaction, as well as lithological properties that are key to expand the limits of directional drilling performance. Join IADD’s Houston Chapter on March 22 for the Downhole Data Acquisition
Extended Luncheon Series. Building on the IADD” Advanced Drilling Dynamics, Beyond Monitoring” forum held in January; we will display and review a number of downhole data acquisition systems available to the industry, explore their data capability, and review new innovative ways to present and analyze the information provided. Targeted Technology Series 2018: Geosteering Solutions Forum and Golf Tournament |
As the industry has moved from drilling primarily vertical wells to horizontal,
the ability to steer, navigate and stay in the target reservoir zone has become more important. The need to understand the reservoir and its most prolific zones has also increased. While geosteering capabilities have improved over the years, they have often created scenarios that put them at odds with conventional drilling objectives. Join us at the IADD Targeted Technology Series, featuring geosteering solutions,
where we’ll have a constructive dialogue about what can be done to satisfy both camps as attendees will hear from presenters on how we can identify and discuss these sometimes-conflicting criteria. An industry networking charity golf event will follow the forum. Whether you choose to attend either the forum or golf, or both, we look forward to seeing you on May 21! WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? - Hear from industry leaders and geosteering experts through a series of panel presentations that will discuss:
- Operator needs
- Drilling issues
- New technology
- Network with your coworkers, clients and industry colleagues over 18 holes of golf
CO-CHAIRS - Forum co-chair: Greg O’Donnell, Pioneer Natural Resources
- Golf tournament co-chair: Shelly Cory, Baker Hughes, a GE
Company

Data Driven Drilling & Production Conference |
Jim Oberkircher, IADD's Director, has been invited to co-chair and organize a panel session at the Data Driven Drilling & Production Conference on May 30
- 31 in Houston. The Digital Drilling Optimization session will help provide: - Insight on how digital twin applications and modeling can improve well placement accuracy and minimize personnel exposure.
- Learn more about the latest improvements in visualization technologies and simulators.
- Review progress on autonomous drilling rig technology.
- The Journey ahead to Data Driven Cognitive Cyber Drilling Systems: Early Kick Detection using Adaptive Analytics with
Deconvoluted Downhole Accelerometer Data.
It's clear that if oil & gas companies want to grow market share and be competitive, they need to understand and implement data driven drilling and production methods... and fast. That's why the Data Driven Drilling & Production Conference is back for 2018 and bigger than ever. For more information on the conference, click here.

Come join us on April 19 at Landry’s Seafood Restaurant in The Woodlands, Texas from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. to network, view sponsored booths, talk to your customers and competitors or just come by to chill.
Hors-d'oeuvres and the first drink are on us. "Spring is nature's way of saying "Let's Party"!" ~ Robin Williams Good Advice. This is not your father’s business gathering, (more like a neighborhood BBQ) with seafood, and we don’t have to clean up afterward. We are offering sponsorships, with booths for display and conversation both inside the dining room, on the patio overlooking the water or in a private area of the parking lot, (for large pieces of equipment that you can’t show off very often. Slim Hole Solutions Recap |
|
After 4 successful years as the IADD Permian Basin Chapter, we have
decided to start 2018 with a new identity and a new focus on drilling solutions that are specific to the Permian Basin. The Permian Basin Association of Directional Drilling (PBADD) will remain an affiliated with the National IADD organization but entirely focus on the Permian Basin.
The first PBADD forum for 2018 titled “Slim Hole Solutions” was held on Wednesday February 21st at the Midland Country Club in Midland, Texas. The event had considerable support with sponsorships from several local operators and service companies. With respect to registration, 123 people registered with
110 in attendance. This included 36 attendees from 12 different local operators and 78 new members. The three speaker panel represented their expertise and experiences from an Operators, Service Company and Manufacturer point of view. Tim Smith, the North Delaware Basin Drilling Engineer Supervisor at Concho addressed the sub topic Why Slim Hole?, Scott W. Powell, the SME (Subject Matter Expert) for Sperry Drilling Motors discussed “Lateral Control vs. BHA Design” and Mr. Jorge Rebellon, the Business Development and Applications Engineer for PV Fluid Products enlightened the audience with his presentation on “Tool Availability”. Overall the content from these three speakers were engaging, technical and practical.
The PBADD is very excited for 2018 and this forum is
just one example of timely discussions on what matters most to operators and service companies in the Permian Basin. Upcoming events for the Permian Basin Associations of Directional Drilling are as follows: - March Madness Mixer on March 22nd at Mulberry Café, 2101 W Wadley Ave #8, Midland Texas. This will be a joint event with WEN (Women’s Energy Network).
- In April we plan to continue this educational series on “Slim Hole Solutions” as this theme has a broad range of sub-topics. TBD
- The Basin Burnout community event will take place on September 22nd, 2018. More information including registration forms for cooking teams and event sponsors will go out next month.
- The final educational luncheon for
the year will be held in late October.
- The yearly PBADD Christmas party will be held in early December.
The IADD Houston chapter continues to work with operators, service companies and universities to advance directional drilling technology and to grow its performance capability. During 2018 we will concentrate on delivering quality wellbores. In January we discussed the well planning process. Operators, service providers, and software developers shared their respective expectations, service capabilities, and technology. During the panel discussion process improvement
opportunities were identified. In February we built on the well planning discussion and explored how wellbore tortuosity affects torque and drag and drilling performance. Many algorithms were discussed by Pradeep Kumar from UT that have been developed to calculate wellbore quality indices. During
our March event we will investigate downhole data acquisition technology and data processing to deliver state of the art drilling optimization to the drilling industry. More exciting subjects are in our plan for the year dealing with surface control systems, near bit / at bit measurements, and vibration mitigation. As the number of participants for the IADD luncheons continue to grow, we are confident that our focus on delivering technical content is recognized and
valued.
Vibration Mitigation Presentation
