International Association of Directional Drilling Newsletter February Edition

Published: Mon, 02/12/18

Letter From the Executive Director
Despite ice and snow in Houston and Dallas, more than 65 people joined us at the Advanced Drilling Dynamics topical forum, which provided an opportunity for a lively exchange of information and ideas on an area that is gaining increased attention. There is room for growth in our understanding of the drilling environment.

Participants and panelists discussed taking a more engineered approach to many of our directional challenges. Directional drilling is often an empirical / experience-based business. While experience is an important teacher, it cannot always solve issues that consistently hinder optimal performance. Analytical approaches using downhole data and surface modeling are increasingly being utilized. Couple this with a methodical problem-solving approach—one that focuses on improving performance and not just on avoiding problems—and you have the opportunity to drastically improve performance.

If you missed the forum, presentations and lessons learned from the program committee are now available on the website (https://www.iadd-intl.org/advanced-drilling-dynamics-beyond-monitoring-presentations/).

Some of the steps recommended by the group included:
  • Identifying “what are our limiters?”
  • Developing a physics-based practice to extend the limiter
  • Determining the risk that might prevent the person from changing how they do the work and redesign it. Ask the people who do the work what they think.

My sense is that our industry is on the cusp of some revolutionary performance breakthroughs. Things that will fundamentally change our industry, and by extension, the entire energy industry. This is an exciting time to be involved in this industry. Stay tuned as we embark on this journey together.

Sincerely,

Jim Oberkircher

Executive Director

February Monthly Luncheon - Well Tortuosity

High wellbore tortuosity can lead to problems such as high torque and drag, reduced hole cleaning and stuck pipe events. It can also negatively affect completion and production operations and ultimately affect well production. Therefore it is important to have a robust mechanism to measure the tortuosity of wells at they are drilled. At the University of Texas at Austin, drawing inspiration from some approaches used in the medical field, we have developed an easy to use “Tortuosity Index”. This index only uses commonly available survey data, and is a real-time index. This thereby enables well path corrections as the drilling progresses. The index is three dimensional, but can also be used independently to evaluate the tortuosity on both the azimuthal and inclination plane. This talk will introduce this very useful index, showcase some results and explore future work in this area

Sponsor Spotlight - MSC Software
MSC Software Corporation – Simulating Reality, Delivering Certainty

MSC Software Corporation provides the modeling and simulation software that today has become the standard for structural analysis in both the aerospace and auto industries.  With roots reaching back to the NASA Apollo program, MSC is now part of Hexagon AB providing products for simulating the non-linear dynamics of mechanical systems, vibration, noise abatement, fatigue, durability, material properties, temperature and pressure effects, fluid flow, fluid-structure interaction, instrumentation and controls for both the oil and gas and mining industries.

For each stage of the drilling, completion, production and workover life-cycle, simulation can assist with tool designs, reduce development and physical testing costs, optimize BHA configurations and provide an engineering-based understanding of the various controls and subsystems that influence weight transfer and the dynamics between top-drive to bit under a wide range of downhole conditions.  This understanding then in turn enables better decisions to mitigate downhole vibration and other risks with an intelligent manufacturing approach to drilling that results in an overall bottom line improvement in safety, efficiency and performance

MSC Software has approximately 1,200 employees with global R&D centers in 6 countries.  Hexagon, a leading global provider of information technologies (Nasdaq Stockholm: HEXAB), has approximately 18,000 employees in 50 countries who drive productivity and quality across geospatial and industrial enterprise applications  by integrating sensors, software and domain knowledge with customer workflows into intelligent information ecosystems that deliver actionable information.

Data Driven Drilling & Production Conference

Drilling Joins Production to Break Down Silos and Deliver Maximum Value

At the Annual Data Driven Production gathering we bring together the leading lights in oil and gas innovation, the trail blazers of IoT and analytics. In 2018 we are inviting the drilling community to join us as we look at how digital operating models and data driven
asset management practices can bridge the gap between completions and production. Between drilling methods and production maintenance routines.

Bring Production Costs Down Now – Innovate for the Future

The conference – the best of its kind in the US – has seen cutting edge insight, case studies and even live demos from lead ng operators including Chevron, Marathon and Statoil. Prepare for the new age of results driven, automated, digital & remote operations to ensure your organization is ahead of the crowd in production efficiency.

A place where investors meet innovators With our new technology showcase session we are building a panel of innovation and investment leaders to evaluate the honest digital drilling and production technology prospects. services through their paces in our exhibition zone, enabling you to compare and contrast a range of solutions, in one place, over just two days.

Bring a team and make the most of the opportunity Bringing together over 500 attendees, 30 pioneering exhibitions, 50 expert speakers and hundreds of operator delegates, Data Driven Drilling and Production 2018 is the go-to global meeting point for oil & gas digital innovators. US Crude Output to Jump Above 11 Million Barrels a Day Sooner Than Expected

After oil output already topped 10 million barrels a day back in November, output will climb above the 11 million mark this November, the Energy Information Administration said in its monthly Short-Term Energy Outlook on Tuesday. It previously forecast production above that level in November 2019....

US Drillers Boost Oil Rig Count to Highest in Nearly 3 years: Baker Hughes
U.S. energy companies added 26 oil rigs this week, boosting the count to 791, its highest since April 2015, even as crude pulled back from three-year highs with drillers expecting higher prices for their output in 2018 than last year....

Number of US Energy Deals Rose in 2017, But Value Declined
The US energy sector saw 224 mergers and acquisitions in 2017, a 13% increase from 2016, but their combined value was down 10% year-on-year to $182 billion as companies struck only seven mega-deals worth $5 billion or more, according to reports from PricewaterhouseCoopers and Wood Mackenzie. "Many investors seem to be taking a wait-and-see approach to the rapidly changing market dynamics," said PwC's Joe Dunleavy....

Spring Social Event

Come join us on April 19 at Landry’s Seafood Restaurant in The Woodlands, Texas from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. to network, view sponsored booths, talk to your customers and competitors or just come by to chill.  Hors-d'oeuvres and the first drink are on us.

"Spring is nature's way of saying "Let's Party"!" Robin Williams

Good Advice. This is not your father’s business gathering, (more like a neighborhood BBQ) with seafood, and we don’t have to clean up afterward.

We are offering sponsorships, with booths for display and conversation both inside the dining room, on the patio overlooking the water or in a private area of the parking lot, (for large pieces of equipment that you can’t show off very often.

If you are interested, please contact Cheryl Landwehr at clandwehr@iadd-intl.org.
