Letter From the Executive Director

The IADD forum series wrapped up with our last event of the year featuring Well Bore Placement and Rotary Steerable Systems.  There was a lot of engaging discussion and interaction. We have a full slate of events scheduled for next year.  Watch for the announcements soon.

One area of interest that came out of the well bore placement conference was the interest in coming up with a well bore quality indicator or score card.  This would take not only the smoothness of the well path but also other areas such as ease of completion and production operations.  There are a number of metrics out in the industry, so we will attempt to bring them together in a cohesive system

Our year wraps up with our annual sporting clays tournament where we will support a number of worthy charities.  As an industry we have a lot to be thankful for this year, so get out and spread the cheer!

Thanks to all that have supported IADD in 2017.  We look forward to a productive 2018.

Sincerely,

Jim Oberkircher

Executive Director

Today's drilling devices output massive amounts of data! On top of that, you can sometimes have 2, 3, even up to 10 systems all outputting data in different formats. Can you imagine, 10 systems outputting related data in different formats and you're stuck with analyzing and comparing this data?

With this in mind, at Erdos Miller we have created the WAVE application: a data analysis software package that analyzes both real-time and recorded memory for drilling devices. WAVE provides the user with a graphical workbench which brings all this data together automatically into one consistent graphical work-space.
WAVE SOFTWARE

Some of the features you may enjoy the most from WAVE are:

  • You can load data from different sources and manufacturers.

  • You can easily analyze data visually.

  • The time correction feature.

  • You can create PDF reports easily.

Letter From the Houston Chapter Director

During 2017 the Houston Chapter brought industry professionals from both the service provider/manufacturer and operator community together to identify improvement opportunities for improving the performance reliability of directional drilling BHA’s. Workshops focusing on Rotary Steerable systems and Creating a High Capacity BHA have certainly be the highlights of the IADD Houston chapter this year. Individual presentations discussing Data Management Systems, LWD Data Capability, and PDM Elastomer Technology have contributed to round off the systems approach.

Our final event for 2017 will be the Clay Shoot on Dec 1st. We hope to greet all of the “Shooters” for a great social event.

During 2018 we will continue to focus on maintaining and building a technology focused platform that will provide all attendees with the ability to share and discuss the latest technology and process developments and learn how these changes can be applied to reduce exploration cost and improve performance.

During the first quarter we will explore latest development in well planning software and methodology, discuss near bit data measurements, and downhole drilling data acquisition systems.

Throughout 2018 the Houston chapter will invite drilling contractors to explore opportunities to link real time downhole date with surface data systems in to provide a comprehensive drilling optimization tool. Other exciting subjects will be the mitigation of drilling dynamics, updating Geo Steering technology, and improving equipment capability and reliability with the expanding trend in increasing rig capacity.  IADD would like to wish you and your family an enjoyable Holiday season.

Sincerely,

Roland Illerhaus

Donations Requested

Over the years, the IADD has partnered with Operation Military Embrace, Inc., (OME)—a Texas-based tax-exempt/non-profit 501(c)(3) military support organization that’s helps America’s seriously injured and ill Warriors and their families in their time of need—through the donation of cash and household items (toys, kitchen items, linens, etc.).

This year, we’d like to invite attendees to our summer shooting event and Houston chapter luncheons to bring items (clothes, gift cards, food items, etc.), which will then be given to wounded service members at Camp Hope (Houston campus for the PTSD Foundation), as well as other private and VA facilities throughout the year.

Directional Drilling Minute: Drillscan

This video, created from WellScan software, shows a typical case study for unconventional wells. The software simulates the drilling rotary phase along the lateral, where one sees first the vertical phase with no apparent buckling, then the curve with strong side forces and bending stress along the pipe, and at last the lateral section where buckling occurs in a washout section. Note the effect of WOB on buckling, going from 20 to 45klbs. WellScan software is the only commercial software able to run post buckling analysis in 3D wells without using FEA analysis (computation time greatly reduced!).
